Tampa Homeowners Association of Neighborhoods: A Brief History
By Patrish Naegle
“When I get the neighborhood support, it is amazing how fast other people will get on board,” says John Dingfelder, a former member of Tampa’s City Council. As a long-time supporter of neighborhood power, it was natural that he was one of the first to encourage a revival of THAN last year. “With the help of unified neighborhoods, we have been able to make progress, and we have some other good things coming down the pike.”
THAN began in 1988 when government and neighborhood leaders recognized that an umbrella organization would be able to advocate for the City of Tampa as a whole, and to strengthen individual neighborhoods at the same time. Zoning, code enforcement, growth management and workforce housing are just some of the issues that THAN has tackled over the years. Its members frequently serve on official committees, reviewing and providing input to changes in city codes, ordinances and regulations. Many volunteers in THAN have long experience in bringing matters before local government bodies, such as city council, and can offer newer members insight on how to have their voices heard.
Like many volunteer organizations, THAN had a period of near inactivity, but has recently elected officers who are enthusiastic about building THAN back to its former glory. A top priority is welcoming all of Tampa’s neighborhood associations and other community organizations to join together under the big umbrella.
Stephanie Poynor is the new THAN President: “While Stop Overbuilding South Tampa was fighting our first monster apartment complex, I began looking for resources. I met Carroll Ann, and since then, we've worked together daily. We felt that THAN was the next step for us, and our trio was rounded out by Secretary-Treasurer Sandra Sanchez, the long-time Armory Garden President. Growing THAN is our top priority, as THAN is only as powerful as its members. Developers have deep pockets, but we have a deep bench of home-run hitters who are ready, willing and able to protect our communities.”
Carroll Ann Bennett is Vice-President: "When residents unite and organize, they gain a voice and a seat at the table. It is easy to ignore an individual who may not be knowledgeable of the rules and the process, but it is hard to ignore an educated, assertive group. That's how we help each other."
John Dingfelder agrees: “I’m just tickled to see the invigoration of THAN, it’s a wonderful thing and I’ve seen how powerful and successful THAN can be as a unified voice. Since I tend to be pro-neighborhood, I need and appreciate THAN’s help in realizing these neighborhood issues.”
THAN has monthly meetings in person and on ZOOM, and encourages everyone who is interested in protecting and promoting the quality of life in the City of Tampa to attend.
We couldn't accomplish our goals without the help of supporters like you. Thank you for your time and donations that make this possible!
